2020 brought uncertainties and challenges, especially for the multitude of people who are currently living below the breadline. Last year over 2 million South Africans lost their jobs owing to the forced shutdown, and we anticipate the ramifications will continue to be felt in the months to come.
Despite the challenging and restricting environment, the Siyabonga Africa team managed to get services and support to disadvantaged communities. We are especially proud to have been among the first South African non-profits to use technology to initiate new and better ways of doing things.
Our SMS Food Voucher programme is an incredible time and resource saver (no more packing food parcels and delivering them to central pick up points). Once identified and screened, a needy family can get a voucher within 24 hours without leaving their homes.
The system also allows beneficiaries the choice of which food items to buy, and the dignity of being able to pay for their groceries at the till like anyone else, instead of feeling the shame of having to queue in the street for charity handouts.
However, none of this would have been possible without your generous support. On behalf of our team, SIYABONGA (“we thank you – we are grateful”) for your kind support of our work. Apart from delivering 89 996 food parcels, food vouchers and prepared meals, we also assisted 1 128 people through our information desk and referrals service, helped create 143 jobs and trained 763 people in baking, computer literacy, early childhood development, vegetable gardening, welding, construction health and safety and life skills.
It is a real privilege to be able to do the work we do on your behalf. Together we bring help and hope to those who need it most.
Thank you for your support and partnership.
