Imagine having to send your child off to school with no lunchbox, and only a crust of bread for breakfast … knowing that it’s not nearly enough to keep them going all day. Growing kids need milk, eggs, meat, fresh fruit and vegetables. Items that seldom find their way into the shopping baskets of poorer South Africans nowadays.
Out of their slim earnings, they first have to set aside money for transport and electricity – both of which have just gone up, thanks to the recent petrol price increase and Eskom tariff hikes. There’s barely anything left over for food.
Even the cheapest bag of maize meal now costs R70, and the price of most other staples has increased by 8-15% over the past year. How do you stretch your few precious rands to feed yourself and your family?
Every day, desperate, hungry men and women turn up outside the gates of Siyabonga Africa,
hoping for something … anything … to eat.
And with your donation of R700, we can provide a vulnerable family with an emergency food voucher and continue our food support programmes.
It’s not a long-term solution, we know. South Africans need jobs so they can earn a decent living and look after themselves and their families. That’s why our main programmes are skills training, job creation and enterprise development.
But right now, some people just need to eat to survive. And that is what your precious donation of a food voucher does.
So please, will you make your donation online right now?
And we’ll send you our favourite steak and cheesy onion cream pie recipe to make with items from your food cupboard and fridge.
